1961 Ignacio Fleta. No 221
Description
This is a fine Fleta as played by John WiIliams in many of his early recording and concerts. Throughout the majority of Williams' early career, a Fleta was his instrument of choice to produce the fresh and clearly articulated tone he is revered for. Williams' Number 235, made in 1961, was his primary guitar for both recordings and performances for many years. After retiring this guitar he continued to use Fleta instruments until the late 1970s.
Provenance
Number 221, also made in 1961 and in its original case, was the concert instrument of one of the most significant figures of Australian guitar. It has a warm Fleta sound and exhibits the cello-like basses and ringing-balanced trebles typical of Fletas. It displays superb clarity, refinement and good balance. The neck is comfortable and the action flows easily.
Condition
Aside from insignificant minor nail marks below the rosette it is in superb original condition. There are no repairs or cracks.
The guitar offers easy action and beautiful tone, something still not achieved by most makers today.
Clearly, Fleta was way ahead of his time in construction, set up and playability and colour palette.
This is a guitar that, in its day, was a landmark and even today is seldom equaled.
I am sure I will not have it for long and I hope we can retain it in Australia before it is snapped up by an overseas collector.
