As John Ray himself says, he is really an overnight success 30 years in the making and he has been willing to move countries in order to drink deeply of the Granada tradition of guitar making.
There are no shortcuts in his work and knowing that, in late 1989, John Ray moved to Granada, to learn the secrets of artisan guitar making.
Over the years he worked with Jonathan Hinves, Jose Angel Chacón and the master Antonio Marín, he has absorbed the ways and techniques of traditional Spanish guitar building with encouragement from friend and guitar maker, Rolf Eichinger.
His designs reflect his deep study of the roots of traditional guitar techniques, his classical and flamenco guitars were developed from the study of the great historical guitars of Torres, Barbero, Lorca and Hernández Santos.
In time, he has achieved a unique style, typical for the sound and design of his instruments, developed with the requirements of guitarists in mind.
They are tonally driven and lyrical.
Apart from their Granada sound, and the ease they provide for the player to blend colour, John's guitars also are remarkable for their comfort, thanks to the comfortable neck, something that is especially important for professionals.
He invests time and care in selecting the finest materials and tone woods, his guitars are made to last and improve with time and playing.
