School: Strathmore Secondary College

Composition: Minimalismi by Nicola Paradiso

Conductor: Alexandra Velasco

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Minimalism, birthed in the mid-twentieth century, is an art movement that employs minimal music materials. By focusing on the internal processes of the music, minimalism’s prominent features often include a steady pulse (if not drones), consonant harmony, and reiteration of musical phrases or smaller units such as figures, motifs, and cells.

In this piece, Paradiso explores layering the melodic theme among guitar parts, call and response between parts, and repetitive figures in eight-bar phrases that gradually build and ebb away. The effect is created in shifts in volume and use of slurs or ‘pull-offs’.
