Description: Gary Southwell A- Series Guitar 1995, Nottingham , England

This guitar is Gary Southwell’s own design taking the best of the Viennese and Spanish guitar making traditions and combining them with the ability to amplify the guitar with onboard piezo pickup and mic.

Aesthetically this guitar in inspired by Johann Georg Stauffer/ Johann Gottfried Scherzer and the Vienna model guitars of Herman Hauser

1. This guitar has excellent clarity and balance between treble and bass registers and projects very well.

The ease in playing this guitar is outstanding coming from its smaller 63cm scale and comfortable body shape.

The real success of this instrument lies in its versatility.

Equally useful for 19th and 20th Century repertoire, the plug-in aspect makes this guitar attractive as a possible nylon string for jazz players and all gigging musicians.

Gary has made guitars for many leading musicians including Frank Bungarten, David Starobin, Scott Tenant and Nigel North.

Perhaps most famously he had a long running collaboration with Julian Bream building reproductions of guitars by Herman Hauser.

Details:

Top: Spruce Top with fan bracing

Back and sides: Birdseye maple back and sides

  • Rock maple neck with Rosewood fingerboard

  • Stauffer style head with machine head by Rodgers

  • Fishman piezo pickup/ crown microphone combination

Scale: 63cm

Daniel Nistico when recording the demo for this guitar mentions “It is a beautiful guitar, beautifully constructed. It is attempting to get the warm lyrical sound of the 19th Century. It’s lyrical, each string has quality and character (shows). Each string is distinctive but blends well together. Very easy to tune (shows).Plays Adelita and says “ Absolutely gorgeous, very evocative”. …plays WOW very nice.
