When Nicolasa Salamanca died, widow of Domingo Esteso, her nephews decided to call themselves first SOBRINOS DE DOMINGO ESTESO-CONDE HERMANOS and later HERMANOS CONDE-SOBRINOS DE DOMINGO ESTESO.

This period was the most fruitful for the brothers in the construction of the guitars demanded by the vast majority of professionals, among whom we find: Niño Ricardo, Sabicas, Melchor de Marchena, Mario Escudero, Paco de Lucia, Paco Cepero, Enrique de Melchor, the “Habichuela”, Oscar Herrero, Gerardo Nuñez, Rafael Riqueni, “Tomatito”, Al di Meola, John McLaughlin, Bob Dylan, Cat Stevens…
.
Among guitar collectors this is a desired era for its excellent sound quality and is a very rare example of the famed Gravina 7 workshop signed by Paco de Lucia since this was the top model the workshop made in Brazilian Rosewood. This guitar is made of excellent tone woods, impossible to obtain nowadays. Brazilian rosewood with breathtakingly beautiful shades, as well as German spruce top, also with a straight and even grain endow this guitar with plenty of quality and character, typical of Hermanos Conde in that time.

This guitar has got great character. One of the most remarkable qualities is its incredible volume. While testing it thoroughly, we noticed really powerful and bright bass strings, as well as vivid trebles with great scope, all of which make a guitar with an extraordinarily high sound quality.

This flamenco guitar has got medium tension, and a perfectly balanced height of strings in the saddle and fingerboard, providing the guitarist with a high degree of comfort for both hands, as well as an easy performance.

Clearly from the period when they shared a common Pozuelo workshop $3700.

 This is vintage guitar from the golden Conde flamenco guitar building tradition. Condition: This Conde Hermanos is in terrific playing condition with an absolutely stunning sound that must be heard. There is some normal wear for a guitar this age, but it is in great structural condition and still looks nice. Neck is very ergonomic with a very good feel and the action is comfortable and there are no dead spots or buzzing. No fret great wear. Back of the neck is smooth without any dings or dents. Overall, the body finish is in good shape with typical finish checking. There are also some light scratches and a small area of finish wear on the lower bout bass side. No cracks in the body. This is one loud flamenco guitar with a gorgeous vintage sound. You would not find in a modern copy. Includes period case. Everything pictured is ready to be professionally packed and shipped.

By the time he was sixteen, he was performing alongside such renowned artists as "Chano Lotabo", "Rancapino", "Curro Malena" and "El Chato de la Isla."

During this period, he met Mario Melero Deudero (b. 1927), a Spanish guitar maker also from Cadiz, and discovering his true vocation apprenticed with him. When Mario retired, in fact, he passed his tools on to Rafael, who like his teacher, continues to build handmade classical and flamenco guitars using traditional tools and techniques.

Later, traveling to Madrid, he met the guitar maker Jose Romero, who encouraged and supported his efforts. Among the luthiers from whose friendship and advice he has profited, he also mentions Vicente Carrillo Casas. Among his clientele are such artists as Manuel Parrilla, Juan Parrilla, Moraito Chico, "El Carbonero" and Alberto San Miguel, professor of guitar at the Conservatory of Music in Granada. He brings to his flamenco and classical guitars both the knowledge of his craft and the sensibilities of a professional guitarist

A really excellent Concert level guitar equally at home on the concert stage as on a Flamenco tablao. This is because Rafael Romero is renown as a flamenco maker so even his classicals have a flamenco soul that rings forth as soon as you apply flamenco technique. Although it will be perfectly behaved when you merely stroke it.

So, a very versatile guitar delivering pronounced bases and ringing trebles. It will appeal to a player looking for very clear, fast speaking classical with light overtones for a classical it plays very aggressive and flamenco. This is very common with flamenco guitar builders even their classicals have a flamenco edge.

This flamenco guitar is part of the “Flamenco Studio Professional” series of guitars made for the advanced student. It has real flamenco attack power, tonal palette and playability to perform in the concert hall or recording studio. This is a spruce Blanca, so it has a nice snappy attack, with a lot of bite and projection. Yet it is incredibly well set up.

Aesthetically, it features a 3 piece back, and old-school, Esteso-style head shape. Overall, a solid instrument at this price point.  I have three of these left from my latest Madrid buying trip to choose from.

Daniel is a Tasmanian luthier building guitars in the traditional Spanish style. Torres, Hauser, Santos Hernandez and Jose Romanillos are his prime influencers.

For most of the 20th Century the history of the flamenco concert guitar was the rivalry for the Flamenco crown between Conde Hermanos and Ramirez. It is personally selected by professional flamenco player Thomas Lorenzo.

As you can hear from the recordings it is loud and incisive and the pieces illustrate it’s flamenco attack strong dynamics and balance across the strings. Particularly strong and present in the midrange making very versatile across musical genres for live performance.

 I have known Thomas over many years and he plays across genres Classical, flamenco, world music, jazz and across differnt guitar electric, steel flamenco but always Conde Hermanos. He recently left Australia to return to Spain and left me this, guitar his pride and joy and constant companion to sell.

So I asked him what drew him to the Eduard Ferrer after so many Condes. This is what he said:

“This guitar has become my favorite for live performances due to its outstanding dynamic range, surpassing even my Conde guitars. Its midrange projection ensures that the audience can enjoy my performance with clarity, as it doesn't get overpowered by other band members.

Until 2017, I stuck with my Conde guitars for live shows. However, I faced issues when playing eclectic styles or with instruments like bass; they tended to overpower, requiring excessive amplification.

To address this, I visited Spain, reconnecting with my family and consulting various luthiers. I reached out to Eduardo Duran for a solution, desiring a guitar suitable not only for flamenco but also for the jazz style I play. Arcangel Fernadez 2008 Flamenco – one of the last built

This flamenco guitar was built one of the last two built by the master luthier Arcángel Fernández in the year 2008, considered to be one of the best guitar makers in history.

His instruments are extremely rare, since Japanese collectors bought almost all of them. His guitars are truly admired by guitar makers, collectors and guitarists all around the world.

This is a rare and unique guitar in every way.

Arcangel Fernandez de la Mata - Started as a flamenco guitar player and ended up working with Marcelo Barbero when he approached him to make him a guitar.

Marcelo Barbero already a legend then and with an extensive waiting list said “impossible” but Arcangel finally got his guitar. Finally apprenticed under Barbero he takes over the workshop at his demise and as the only apprentice Barbero ever taught, finishes all his outstanding orders. Later moving to his own workshop at 26 Jesus y Maria in Lavapies.

This is the beginning of a in constant search of beauty and perfection in guitar making.

His own guitar building references are Antonio Torres, Marcelo Barbero and Santos Hernadez. His guitar building process  was always slow and painstaking to such an extent that his guitars are termed “ghosts”.

Since, even in his lifetime so few people had ever seen one and the waiting list was 15 years even back then.

Conde Hermanos is one of the most famous names in the world of Flamenco guitar.
For sale is the 1969 Sobrinos de Esteso guitar. This amazing instrument was purchased directly from Pepe de Lucia during his tour here who had it from Paco. It has had only one owner since.
This guitar is a step up from the other top end Conde's that are on the market because they used the best woods and were intended to represent the pinnacle of guitar making in the Conde workshop.
The Conde Hermanos lineage dates back to Domingo Esteso who established a workshop in Madrid in 1915. He passed away in 1937 and his nephews and great nephews continued the tradition although they have recently parted ways.
This guitar has been played but is in excellent condition.
It features a fine grained Cedar top, Rosewood back and sides and an ebony fingerboard. It has a French polish finish. The attention to detail is extraordinary and the crafting of this guitar is meticulous. It comes in a hard case.

1960’s Conde Hermanos Pozuelo blanca with Pegs-Domingo Esteso Headstock

 This guitar has been completely restored being hand French Polished, re-fretted, action adjusted to perfection and tuning corrected.

A small crack on the back has been expertly repaired and has not effect on the sound of the guitar.

This is a one of a kind Conde with incredible volume (you wont need a microphone!)

The sound is explosive with a quick and sharp attack.

It has the typical dry, “woody” and firm tone, capable of retaining clarity and punch even when driven to the extreme limits.

There is perfect balance though all the registers.

The third string has a brightness and resonance that is lacking in most guitars.

It has a fast action that is very comfortable to play.

Because of its volume this would be a great guitar for accompanying dancers as well as for solo playing.

 Paco’s comments say it all really. He praised the Erez Perlman and said that it sounded like the guitars of olden times. 

 The presentation is very flamenco with an austere look and the rosette shows timeless beauty. The plantilla is reminiscent of Manuel Reyes.

As Paco says in the video it is traditional sounding, loud and very fast and responsive with a very dry flamenco sound that comes across in the recording below. While the Erez is traditional sounding they feature mechanical pegs for the convenience of the stage musician needing to retune between sets.

 No wonder there is long waiting list

In summary: It’s a modern guitar but built with time and patience and like the guitars of old with a clear strong flamenco projection and extremely light and fast.

 Condition Report:

Immaculate, the owner has a number of high end flamenco guitars in his collection and liked the Erez Perlman so much he ordered two.

This is his back-up guitar so it is like new.

Immaculately presented Hermanos Conde Medialuna from the famed Gravina 7 Conde workshop that was the lifetime favourite of Paco De Lucia’s.

This guitar was made at the height both the workshop’s fame and is contemporaneous with the best of Paco’s Gravina 7 guitars.

Being a Negra medialuna it is a concert soloist guitar for the stage it has more sustain and projection and greater tonal range since this Model was made to project to the back of large concert halls as opposed to blancas more designed as an accompanying instrument for dancing or cante in small tablaos.

 Condition Report:

The current owner has a number of high end guitars and is a Classical guitar teacher so it has not seen any playing over the last few years.

There are no cracks or visible repairs and the lacquer is in superb condition.

 Given it’s pristine condition it would be a great addition to a special guitar collection or great opportunity for a working musician to own a guitar from the golden era of Conde’s guitar building.

1972 Jose Ramirez III 1A Concert Flamenco

 This guitar is in excellent original condition apart from being re-fretted as well a having new wooden pegs fitted.

Has all the characteristics of the Ramirez guitars from this the best epoch of the Ramirez workshop when the best makers were part of the team.

The tone is a perfect blend of beauty and true flamenco aggressiveness. It has great power, as well as sustain, sweetness, a fullness of tone and a balance across the entire register.

When playing melodically it sings like a human voice.

This guitar is reminiscent of the sound of the guitars played by Sabicas, Manolo Sanlucar and Juan Serrano who also played Ramirez guitars.

As sweet as the tone is, it still has the aggressive response when pushed in the right direction – rasgeados in particular are quite explosive and powerful.

Playability is super easy, with a fast action.

Conde Hermanos is one of the most famous names in the world of Flamenco guitar.

For sale is a 2008 Conde Hermanos Reedicion guitar. This amazing instrument is No 6 of 50 reproductions of a famous Negra flamenco model made in 1953 in the workshop of the nephews (Viuda y Sobrinos Esteso) of the great Domingo Esteso.

The Conde Hermanos lineage dates back to Domingo Esteso who established a workshop in Madrid in 1915. He passed away in 1937 and his nephews and great nephews continued the tradition although they have recently parted ways.

In the 2000's, each year, Conde Hermanos made a limited edition (50 guitars) of their most famous guitars including the 1953 Negra.

This guitar is a step up from the other top end Conde's that are on the market because they used the best woods and were intended to represent the pinnacle of guitar making in the Conde workshop. Many instruments can be found in collections. Guitar Salon International have one in their "museum".

This guitar has been played but is in excellent condition.

It features a Spruce top, Indian Rosewood back and sides and an ebony fingerboard.

It has a 662mm scale length and a nut width of 52mm. It has a French polish finish.

The attention to detail is extraordinary and the crafting of this guitar is meticulous. It comes in a hard case.

The sound is very traditional and loud. It can be played with great intensity and remains clear and focused. It is also incredibly responsive when played with a light touch.

I play Tango pieces, classical pieces and even Jazz and it all sounds fabulous. It's a very versatile instrument.

This guitar retailed for around $14,000 US in 2008. I have found 2 other re-edition guitars on the net.

One in the US selling for $24,000 Singapore dollars at Thomas music and the other is on US eBay with a price of around $12,000 US.

The Sale price of No 6 AU $7.500

Jim Redgate is best known for his association with classical guitarists such as Anna Vidovic, the Grigoryan brothers and Sergio Assad.

His skills as a Luthier are exceptional and this guitar is testament to his incredible craftsmanship.

Whilst he is not as well known for his Flamenco guitars, the workmanship and attention to detail on this guitar is what you would expect from a world class Luthier.

The Guitar features a German spruce top matched with a cypress back and sides with an ebony fret board.

The traditional tuning pegs are very functional and add to the traditional character of the instrument.

The guitar is quick and responsive with great volume and presence.

Felix Manzanero retired in 2012. Felix Manzanero learned in the Jose Ramirez shop in the 1950's where he was considered to be one of the best makers. He established his shop in the early 1960's in Calle Santa Ana. He has continued learning and expanding his craft since he has a splendid collection of 100 old Spanish Guitars in his shop dating back to the 18th century. He was considered one of the XX best exponents of Guitar making. Especially his flamenco Negras and made guitars for many of Flamenco’s Greats.

This splendid example was ordered by Ian Davies to play with Victor Monje “Serranito” on the world stage.  So a lot of care was lavished on it. This is truly a hand- made guitar--one man designs, makes and finishes one complete guitar. It was made by a greatly experienced maker at the height of his powers knowing it would be heard by all. The rosette of each guitar is hand made. The woods for this instrument being Brazillian are no longer available and were dried and seasoned by Felix for several decades before beginning this guitar. The bracing and soundboard were carefully worked by Felix to precise flexibility/strength to achieve the unique Manzanero sound. 

It has the all the hall marks of Felix Mazanero full resonant basses with the “darkness” typical of well seasoned Brasillian Rosewood balanced with the rich unctuous trebbles and powerfull midrange.

 Statement from previous owner. a flamenco professional who worked and lived in Spain for many years and who bought the guitar from Ian Davies.

 “The Felix Manzanero is a 1969 Negra and was owned and played by the renowned Ian Davies who used it all the years he worked at café de Chinitas with “Serranito” and also used during his concert tours with Serranito.

He sold it to me when his Arcangel was ready for him after a 6 year wait  in 1974.”

Description:

This guitar has lived all of it’s life here in Australia so has not been thrashed on a flamenco tablao and is in original condition unresored. It is form the brief period when they were labelled “Sobrinos de Esteso and the Hermanos Conde Medialuna worked from the famed Gravina 7 Conde workshop that was the lifetime favourite of Paco De Lucia’s.

This guitar was made at the height both the workshop’s fame and is contemporaneous with the best of Paco’s Gravina 7 guitars.

Being a Blanca medialuna i.e a concert soloist guitar for the stage it has more sustain and projection and greater tonal range since this Model was made to project to the back of large concert halls as opposed to student Conde Models more designed as an accompanying instrument for dancing or cante in small tablaos.

 Condition Report:

The current owner was going to allow his son to inherit it so it has not seen any playing over the last few years.

It is in original condition and has fair playing wear but there are no cracks or visible repairs and the lacquer is in fair condition.

 Given it’s original condition it would be a great addition to a special guitar collection or great opportunity for a working musician to own a guitar from the golden era of Conde’s guitar building.

At this price $5900 price alternatively, as an investment the top could be refinished and value added to the guitar. I compared it to my own 2014 Medialuna Blanca @$10,000 from the same workshop and they are very similar in tone, projection and flamenco attack. With the 1975 one slightly easier to play!

Conde Hermanos is one of the most famous names in the world of Flamenco guitar. For sale is a 2007 Conde Hermanos Gravina 7 guitar.

The Conde Hermanos lineage dates back to Domingo Esteso who established a workshop in Madrid in 1915. He passed away in 1937 and his nephews and great nephews continued the tradition although they have recently parted ways.

It is a 660  scale Medialuna model (signed - as only the top models were) Hermanos Conde guitar form the famous Gravina 7 workshop that made Paco de Lucia’s guitars and is now closed.
